Last January 10, 2020, Aksyon sa Kalamidad Alay sa Sambayanan ng Mindoro, Inc. (AKLAS Mindoro) raised an appeal request to SAFER Foundation.
Typhoon Ursula made its 7th land fall in the municipality of Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro on December 2019, leaving 1,592 families homeless. Damaged roofs meant that families are not secured from the heat and the rain. On behalf of the 109 families in barangay Maasin, an island fishing village and 85 families in Bagong Sikat, AKLAS Mindoro reached out to SAFER Foundation for shelter assistance.
SAFER was able to raise 100,000 from its Quick Response Fund which was turned over to AKLAS Mindoro last January 17, 2020. The amount was given to 150 families: 20 families in Poblacion, 65 families in Bagong Sikat, and 42 families in Nasukob, as well as to the 16 individual nipa shingle weavers.
Distribution of housing materials (nipa shingles, common nail and tie wire) was distributed in Bagong Sikat, Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro through AKLAS Mindoro and other partner organizations KACODE and PHILSSA, in cooperation with the local government unit and Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro. The Nipa weavers were also given additional livelihood income.
Thank you to all the donors who created a SAFER environment for the people of Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro!
