Final Update on Taal Response

September 14, 2020

Sheena Pena

After 42 years, Taal Volcano erupted again, which affected thousands of families and caused millions of agricultural damage. Batangas was placed under a state of calamity last January 13, 2020. SAFER launched an appeal to raise funds for the Taal eruption survivors, in partnership with its member NASSA/Caritas Philippines, Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Commission (LASAC), and in coordination with the Diocesan Social Action Centers (DSACs) of Lipa and Imus.

SAFER was able to augment funds worth Php34,840 for the evacuees in Talisay, Batangas. These were used to purchase non-food items like alcohol, bath soap with clean water, and face mask for 60 families in the Motorpool Evacuation Center and 40 families in the Aya Evacuation Center.

Due to COVID-19 and the lockdowns, distribution was postponed until recently. Last September 10, 2020, LASAC was able to distribute the items to the evacuees.

Meet Sarah, one of the beneficiaries.

Ako po si Sarah Jean Alla, 30 years old.

“I am Sarah Jean Alla, 30 years old. I used to live in Talisay. Live is hard in the evacuation center. If you can give aid, I hope it’s a permanent relocation. We are having a really hard time here in the evacuation.

My husband has a job but it’s not enough because we have 3 kids. It’s hard to earn money now because of COVID.

SAFER continues to prepare its Quick Response Fund for future disasters. Help us be prepared even before another emergency strikes!

We are thankful for our sponsors, SAFER, LASAC, and Caritas. Thank you very much for all your help. We do not lose hope because you give us the strength to fight. We will continue to fight for our family.”
